June 2021 was the last month where it was possible to take out extra loan. You must approve your loan plan for 2021 no later than December 15, 2021 or before completing your education.

COVID-19 and the possibility for extra loans - Updated June 22, 2021

The government and a broad majority in the Danish parliament have on several occasions made it possible for students following a youth education program and students enrolled in a higher education (full- degree) to take out extra SU loans and completion loans as a result of the COVID-19 situation. Most recently, the option has been extended to include May and June 2021, so that it applies to the periods from March to August 2020 and from November 2020 to June 2021.

How to go about it

Approve your loan plan in minSU

You must approve your loan plan in minSU within the usual deadlines in order to get the extra loan installments disbursed.

It is always important that you consider how much you need to lend. You can read more about the consequences of SU loans here.

  • You have already applied for a regular SU loan/SU completion loan: You should not apply for the extra loan specifically, if you have already applied for an SU loan/SU completion loan for the period from January to June 2021.
    If you have already applied for an SU loan for January and February 2021, you have previously received a notification of your state educational grant (støttemeddelelse) in your e-Boks and you can login minSU and fill out and approve your loan plan in order to get the loan paid out.

    From Tuesday May 4, 2021, you can approve your loan plan with the extra loan for May and June 2021 in minSU. If you approve your loan plan no later than Monday May 10, 2021 at 5:00 P.M., your extra loan for May 2021 will be paid out on Monday, May 17, 2021.

    You will have the extra loan for June 2021 paid out at the end of May together with your SU and ordinary SU loans or ordinary completion loan for April. You will receive a notification of your state educational grant in e-Boks about the extra loan for May and June 2021.

    Please note that you must specifically approve your SU loan plan to get the extra completion loan paid out. The SU loan plan is on the same page in minSU as your completion loan loan plan.

  • You have not applied for a regular SU loan/SU completion loan:
    You should apply for a loan according to the regular conditions:

    If you want a SU loan for 2021, you must have applied for it in minSU no later than 5 December 2021 or before you finish your education.To get the loan paid off, you must then complete and approve your loan plan in minSU. You must approve your loan plan for 2021 no later than December 15, 2021 or before completing your education.

    IMPORTANT regarding completion loan: If you want a completion loan, you must apply for it before the end of the month for which you want a completion loan. If you want a completion loan for May 2021, you must applied for it in minSU no later than May 31, 2021. You cannot apply for a completion loan retroactively. To get the completion loan paid off, you must complete and approve your loan plan in minSU. You must approve your loan plan for 2021 no later than December 15, 2021 or before completing your education.

You must always approve a new loan plan in minSU in order to have the loan payed out.

The possibility of extra SU loans/completion loans also applies to students in higher or private education who are doing paid internships in all or part of the periods from March to August 2020 and from November 2020 to June 2021. You have to receive SU or completion loans in September 2021 at the latest after your internship period to be able to take out the extra loan.

Which students can lend the extra SU loan or the extra SU completion loan?

Extra SU loan: In order to be entitled to the extra SU loan you need to be a recipient of SU – read more about the conditions for an SU loan

Extra SU completion loan (slutlån): In order to receive the extra completion loan you have to meet the requirements concerning study activity at a full degree programme in a higher education. Read more about the conditions for a SU completion loan.

In order to get the extra loan, you must have applied for a regular SU loan/SU completion loan within the deadlines. You apply in minSU.

How much extra can I borrow in an SU loan or an SU completion loan in connection with the COVID-19 situation? - Updated May 4, 2021

If you receive SU, you have the opportunity to apply for an SU loan up to DKK 6,468 per month in addition to the SU scholarship and the existing option for SU loans in the period from January to June 2021. This corresponds to a total of up to DKK 9,702 per month as an ordinary SU loan for the months mentioned. In the period March to August 2020 and November and December 2020, the expansion was up to DKK 6,388 per month, and you could therefore be paid up to DKK 9,582 per month. The extension also applies to students in higher education who receive SU completion loans. The completion loan will therefore be extended for the period from January to April 2021 from DKK 8,344 per month to DKK 14,812 per. month. In the period from March to August 2020 as well as November and December 2020, the final loan was extended from DKK 8,241 per month to DKK 14,629 per. month.

How do I apply for the extra SU loan in connection with COVID-19? - Updated May 4,  2021

You need to be a recipient of SU in the period from January to June 2021 to qualify for an SU loan at the same period. Read more about applying for an SU loan on minSU.

You have to apply for a SU loan according to the general conditions. I f you want a SU loan for 2021, you have to apply in minSU no later than 5 December 2021 or before you finish your education.

If you have applied for an SU loan for the period from January to June 2021, or have already received SU loan for these months, you do not need to apply again, as you will be granted the increased loan amount automatically.

Approve your SU loan in minSU

When you have applied for a loan in minSU, you will receive a notification of your state educational grant (støttemeddelelse) in your e-Boks. You must login minSU and fill out and approve your loan plan before you get the loan paid out.

You have to approve your loan plan for 2021 no later than December 15, 2021, or before you finish your education.

How can I apply for an extra SU completion loan in connection with the COVID-19 situation? - Updated May 4, 2021

You must have applied for a SU completion loan within the usual deadlines to get a loan. An SU completion loan cannot be applied for retroactively. For example, if you want a completion loan for March 2021, you must apply to minSU no later than May 31, 2021. 

Approve payment of your SU completion loan - you must use the SU loan plan in minSU

Once you have applied for a completion loan in minSU, you will receive a notification of your state educational grant in e-Boks. You must then complete and approve your loan plan before you get the loan paid off.

You must approve your loan plan for 2021 no later than December 15, 2021 or before completing your education. 

Can I pay back my extra SU loan or SU completion loan immediately if I change my mind?

Yes, you can the loan back to Udbetaling Danmark. You can find more details at borger.dk/student debt.

When will my extra SU loan / SU completion loan be paid out?

We will pay out your loan approximately a week after you have confirmed your loan plan (in danish).

Do I need to be fired from my student job in order to qualify for the extra SU loan / SU completion loan?

Will I be able to take out the extra SU loan/completion loan, if I currently are doing a paid internship? - Updated June, 22 2021

Students who are in paid internships for all or part of the periods from March to August 2020 and from November 2020 to June 2021 as part of their higher education have the possibility of taking out extra SU loans or completion loans. This applies, for example, to pedagogy students and others who are in paid internships during their education.

You can take out the extra loan when your paid internship period has ended and you receive a SU or completion loan again. If you have already applied for a SU loan / completion loan, you will automatically be granted the extra loan in the first month with SU after your internship period. You will be able to see this in your notification of your state educational grant (støttemeddelelse). You must approve your loan plan in minSU to get the extra loan paid out. You can approve the loan plan in the month in which you again receive SU or completion loan.

Please note that when your internship period is over, you must receive a SU or completion loan in september 2021 at the latest in order to be able to take out the extra loan. If you start receiving SU or completion loan in October 2021 or later after ending your internship period, you will not be eligible for the option to take out the extra loan. 

In order to take out the extra SU loan you have to fulfill the regular conditions for SU loan in the months following the paid internship.
